Officials in Tasmania are striving to determine a pink slime that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with some scientists worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
The rosy-colored ooze was found on a portion of Randalls Bay about 60 kilometers south of the city. A like substance has also been noted on parts of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens have been taken and sent to the environmental agency for analysis. A representative commented that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in response to changes in nutrients, temperature, precipitation or sunlight".
"These blooms are occasionally called red or pink tides because the proliferations can change the water red," the representative noted. "Only some phytoplankton events are harmful, with numerous types functioning as a primary source of energy for creatures in the marine food web."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause luminous nighttime effects at night."
Phytoplankton proliferations happen naturally but their rate has grown in the past few years, in part due to climate change and contamination that combine to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually act as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a outbreak, there is a fast increase in their numbers that disrupts the normal functioning of ecosystems.
These occurrences have been equated with marine infernos and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In more extreme scenarios, delicate ocean habitats can be devastated as sea creatures is destroyed or deprived of oxygen, providing more nutrients for the outbreak.
South Australia not long ago dealt with a devastating algal bloom along its coastal region after a succession of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across an extensive zone. The outbreak resulted in swimmers with eye irritation and persistent coughs and may have caused the death of up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to official estimates.
A marine expert, who assisted in examining the onset of that event commented, based on pictures of the local event, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".

Coleman explained sea sparkle did not generate harmful substances similar to the species involved in South Australia's harmful event, but it does eat tiny creatures and "lots of fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were particularly vulnerable.
"Typically one notices a outbreak of this algae after a outbreak of a different species, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she added.
A marine scientist, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, said it appeared the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the primary suspect, pointing to like situations overseas.
"Thus we needs to issue a clear message here, the government and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to analyse the specimens we've gathered and we need to notify the people here," she said.

An advocacy organization has stated dead octopus and deceased marine life being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist labeling the event as an "ecological crisis" and calling on the state premier to visit and "lead the response that officials must be undertaking".
"The leader needs to realize this is a disaster in the unfolding, commercially as well as environmentally."
Speaking to journalists, the leader commented he was not aware of any connections between the event and the farming business, saying laboratory analysis was required before conclusions could be reached.
"We need to ensure our aquatic environments are ecologically sound and sustainable," he remarked.
"Our coastal assets across Tasmania are our treasures and we need to guarantee the people and our economy can operate side-by-side to use our seas efficiently and in a lasting way."
